The main offices provided the pulsating centre for administering the transport and efficient organisation of materials, explosives, food, equipment and personnel at Georgetown Munitions Factory. Its staff was in constant contact with colleagues across The United Kingdom and theatres of war overseas to ensure a constant flow of shells to and from the front.
Delays could cost lives so it was imperative that the men who manned the artillery big guns had a ready supply of ammunition at their disposal to protect themselves and the infantry units. Workers at the Georgetown offices were also responsible for security at the factory and the payment of workers’ wages to ensure they were fed and clothed properly for their highly dangerous but nationally important work.
